mandolin and banjo player

Kelley learned mandolin while studying violin in middle school with a private instructor.  Her teacher really encouraged her to take private violin lessons, and she brokered a deal whereby she’d study violin with him if he’d also teach her mandolin.  She plays mostly country, bluegrass, classical, and pop on the mandolin.

Kelley decided to take up another instrument as a challenge to herself a couple of months before her 23rd birthday, and since she was in a country/bluegrass band at the time, decided on banjo.  She bought some tablature music and set out to learn to play and was able to master a few banjo standards by the time her birthday rolled around.  Her neighbors at the time later admitted they had wished she’d taken up chess instead.
